le cageot
Halfway between cage (cage) and cachot (cell) the French language has cageot (crate), a simple latticework case dedicated to transporting those fruits which, if even only slightly suffocated, will most certainly fall ill.
Assembled in such a way that at the end of its use it can be broken down effortlessly, it never serves twice. Hence it lasts for an even shorter time than the tender, nebulous goods it encloses.
On every street corner that leads to the open markets, its white wood gleams with a radiance without vanity. Still brand new, and slightly stunned at being in the awkward position of being thrown away by the side of the road, this object is most sympathetic - the kind on which, nonetheless, it's best not to concentrate for too long.
