1916.
At 15, Michel adopts the habit of powdering his face,
a habit which he will keep for close to ten years.
To combat his shyness, he begins to drink
and takes up various eccentricities.
He becomes interested in occultism and alchemy.
His brothers are drafted, and so Michel is less looked after
than ever by parents who are too worried about their sons in the army
to see that no danger threaten the one that is closest to them.
